How to Calculate Flooring
Flooring is priced by the square foot but sold by the box, so the calculation runs area → waste → boxes:
- Measure the area. Length × width per rectangle; split L-shapes into two rectangles; include closets and doorway recesses.
- Add waste for your pattern. 5–10% straight lay, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone.
- Divide by box coverage and round up. Coverage is printed on the carton — don't guess it.
Flooring formulas
Material needed = area × (1 + waste %)
Boxes = ceil(material needed ÷ coverage per box)
Worked example — 12 × 12 room, straight lay, 20 sq ft boxes: 144 sq ft × 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft ÷ 20 = 7.9 → 8 boxes.

Leftover full planks are not waste — store them flat and they're your repair stock for the life of the floor.
Tips Before You Order
- Buy every box at once, same lot number. Dye and texture vary between production runs; mixed lots show as patchy shading.
- Let it acclimate. Most plank products need 48 hours lying flat in the room before install.
- Doorways need transitions. T-molding and reducers are sold separately — count your doorways.
- Check the subfloor first. Flatness specs (commonly 3/16″ over 10 ft) are the difference between a quiet floor and a clicky one.
